Defragmenting your hard drive is a simple process and can improve the performance and extend the life expectancy of your hard disk. Fragmentation occurs when software is deleted from your drive, leaving small pockets of unallocated space which causes your drive to operate less efficiently. Defragging your drive is a simple process but can take up to an hour or more to complete depending on the level of fragmentation and size of your hard drive. The following article will guide you through the steps to defragment your drive.
Windows 7:
Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter.
From the disk defragmenter wizard select your hard drive and click Defragment disk.
Windows 8:
Click Start and type a search for Defragment and optimize your drives.
This will open the Optimize Drives tool, select your drive and click Optimize.
Note: You can select Analyze disk if you want to determine if a defragmentation is necessary first.
