How to create a new hard drive partition

The following article will assist you in creating a new partition on your hard drive.

Partitioning a hard drive means sorting a disk into multiple volumes. Keeping your data applications on a partition separate from your operating system can be useful if you need to format or reinstall Windows, you won't lose your important data.

You can access the Disk Management console by opening a command prompt window and entering diskmgmt.msc.

In the disk managemt console you can view your hard drives and existing partitions.

Right click an unallocated area and select New Simple Volume.
Note: You must have free space available before you can create a new partition.

Click next to bypass the welcome page and get to the Specify Volume Size window.

Enter the size you want the volume to be in megabytes. Note that there are 1000 Megabytes to 1 Gigabyte and 1000 Gigabytes to a Terabyte.

Next you will assign a drive letter or path, by default Windows will assign the next available drive letter. Then click Next.

In the Format Partition window fill in the Volume label field to name your new partition and click Next.

Verify the options that you selected and then click Finish.

Your new volume should now appear in the disk management console.
